While it's often the best friend to vegans and vegetarians, nutritional yeast adds a delicious touch to any meal.


Nutritional yeast is a deactivated yeast rich in certain B-vitamins as well as minerals, like iron and zinc. It is often fortified with vitamin B12 making it an appealing choice for those who do not consume animal protein (the main source of this vitamin). It is also a complete protein meaning it provides all nine amino acids essential to the human body.

Nutritional yeast is typically used as a condiment due to its nutty, cheesy flavor. Sprinkle it on popcorn or add a dusting over your favorite tofu dish like our Tofu Bowl over Brown Rice with Golden Gravy. Try working it into a recipe like our Egg Noodles with Spring Peas & Mushroom Gravy. Mock cheeses are often made with nutritional yeast, as well.

Many confuse Brewer's yeast with nutritional yeast, but there is a difference. Both are produced from the same fungus (yeast), but that yeast is obtained from two different places to make these two different products. Brewer's yeast is derived from the fungus used in the brewing world that feeds off grain sugars used to make alcohol or bread. With nutritional yeast, however, the same fungus feeds off sugar cane products like molasses, instead. Therefore, Brewer's yeast is not ideal for those with gluten sensitivities.
