Some call it a knife skill, we call it a life skill. Here's how to zest a lemon without a zester:

Ever find yourself without a zester when cooking a recipe that calls for lemon zest? You're in luck, here are a few simple steps to get the perfect zest, even sans microplane.

1. Assemble your tools. You'll need a small cutting board and a vegetable peeler or small knife.

2. Peel the lemon from top to bottom using the peeler or knife. In this step its important that you only carve off the yellow zest. Try and leave as much of the white pith behind as possible. Continue removing strips of the zest until you've gone all the way around the lemon.

3. Right now your lemon peel is the perfect size to garnish a fun drink or top a colorful dish, but if your'e looking for a finer consistency, use your knife to chop the zest finely. Voila! Zest sans zester!
